Student Spotlight: Md Mahfuz Islam
Islam is one of six out of 101 college classmates who chose to pursue higher-level degrees abroad. He arrived in the U.S. in January 2021 after months of pandemic-related delays in the U.S. and Bangladesh that threatened his academic goals. Islam is now studying the impact of compost on the management of degraded or compacted construction sites and roadside urban soils.

Dr. Miljan Erbez: Development Projects in Agriculture
Dr. Miljan Erbez, Higher Senior Associate for EU Integration in animal husbandry in the Ministry of Agriculture from Bosnia and Herzegovina, traveled to NC State in 2017 as part of the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service Cochran Fellowship Program and recently gave a presentation for the CALS SAIGE International Seminar series this March.
Mike Jones: Carlson Award Recipient 2020-2021
Mike Jones, recent graduate of the Economics Graduate Program has been nominated for the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award which also means he is the recipient of the 2020-2021 Carlson Award. Mike's dissertation provided timely analysis on the use of genetically engineered insects to make farming more profitable in places like the Philippines.

The most impactful experience for me so far was conducting research in New Zealand. At the beginning of my Ph.D. program three years ago, I was offered an opportunity to collaborate with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). I spent 6 months conducting research on a novel aquatic herbicide which was in the labeling process here in the US at the time.
