Our students, faculty, and partners apply their learning to meet local community and global challenges. As volunteers, activists, and leaders, we commit to service and outreach efforts to grow as individuals and as a community.
This program strives to make cooking, nutrition, and gardening fun for everyone. Students teach Cooking Matters classes to participants of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a non-profit organization that pioneers innovative solutions designed to end hunger.

An initiative to foster the next generation of food scientists by creating a community for high school teachers. Students collaborate with the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition to promote breastfeeding. Dr. Fogleman leads the team in creating a framework for programs that advance breastfeeding support for families, individuals, and advocates.

Students visit preschools to read nutrition and health-related books to children, teach parents about health and wellness topics, or provide nutrition education to preschool teachers. Participants gain respect for cultural diversity and public health issues.

A community-based initiative sustained by the greater NC State community to combat food insecurity. Our department and the Food Science Club participate in ongoing food drives to support students and other team members in need.
Visitors to the Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery can enjoy ice cream while watching videos of the plant in operation and discovering North Carolina’s dairy industry through interactive exhibits.
