The CALS Honors program will inspire you to take ownership of your education, explore your passions, and pursue your academic goals beyond the classroom.
Students who meet GPA and program requirements are invited to apply to the CALS Honors Program.
The CALS Honors program helps students to:
- Build connections with faculty and other students
- Identify and take action steps to reach goals
- Expand thinking and doing
- Learn more about their strengths and leadership
- Improve communication skills
- Be prepared to succeed
- Get recognition for their accomplishments
All CALS Honors students will:
Maintain a cumulative 3.35 or higher GPA
Students must maintain a cumulative 3.35 GPA throughout the program
Indicate an estimated Graduation Date
Though this may change, please indicate when you think you will graduate.
Select a Faculty Mentor
Students select a faculty mentor in their second year of the Honors Program based on shared interests or connections.
Successfully complete ALS 398H
ALS 398H is offered in the spring semester of each year, and CALS Honors students typically enroll in either their second or third year in the program. In this course, students will work in groups with a faculty mentor engaging in a hands-on research experience. At the end of the course, students participate in the Undergraduate Research Symposium to present their work.
Complete 9 Honors Credit Hours
Students will successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398).
Choose from the following Options
Option 1 – Complete 6 credit hours of honors research coursework.
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, and successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete ALS 498 and ALS 499.
Total honors credit hours is 18.
Option 2 – Complete 6 credit hours of courses involving study abroad and/or internships and/or service learning.
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete a total of 6 honors credit hours of courses involving study abroad and/or internships and/or service learning.
Total honors credit hours is 18.
Option 3 – Complete PLUS 6 Credit hours of courses of your choice
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete a total of 6 honors credit hours of your choice.
Total honors credit hours is 18.
Option 4 – Complete 240 non-credit hours of internship and/or study abroad and/or service learning.
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete a total of 240 hours of non-credit experiences.
Total honors credit hours is 12. Total non-credit hours is 240.
Option 5 – Complete a total of 120 non-credit hours of internship and/or study abroad and/or service learning and 3 honors credit hours.
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete a total of 120 non-credit hours, and additional 3 honors credit hours of your choice.
Total honors credit hours is 15. Total non-credit hours is 120.
Option 6 – Complete 3 honors credit hours of courses involving study abroad and/or internships and/or service learning and 120 non-credit hours of internship and/or study abroad and/or service learning.
Students will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, be accepted by a faculty mentor, provide an estimated graduation date, successfully complete ALS 398H, successfully complete 9 honors credit hours (excluding ALS 398), and successfully complete 3 honors credit hours of courses involving study abroad, internships, service learning, and successfully complete a total of 120 non-credit hours.
Total honors credit hours is 15. Total non-credit hours is 120.
