Invited Guest Seminar: Dr. Christine Picard

May 1 | 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Join us on May 1 for an Invited Guest Seminar from Dr. Christine Picard, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education at Indiana University Indianapolis.

“Bugs, Biofertilizer, and the Future of Farming”

Insect farming is frequently highlighted for its potential as a sustainable protein alternative; however, its significance extends well beyond the consumption by farm animals and pets. In this presentation, I will explore the broader potential of insect agriculture, particularly its contribution to sustainable crop production through high-value fertilizers derived from insect byproducts. These natural soil amendments have the capacity to enhance plant health, diminish the need for chemical inputs, and close essential nutrient cycles. Additionally, I will introduce the Center for Environmental Sustainability through Insect Farming, an NSF Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC), which unites academic and industry partners to expedite research and innovation in this domain. From waste valorization to regenerative agriculture, insect farming presents a scalable, systems-level solution to contemporary environmental challenges.
