N.C. PSI Makerspace Equipment

Equipping plant scientists with the tools needs to make real-world change.

The N.C. PSI Makerspace provides tools for the development of sensors, ag- internet of things (IoT), edge computing prototyping, and testing of data acquisition platforms. Tools included in the Makerspace include research-scale sensors, imaging systems, ag-IoT platforms, custom drones, 3D printers and scanners (including a resin 3D printer) and automated data acquisition platforms.

5 Axis CNC

Produces objects by subtractive manufacturing. It mills the substrate with precision to create metal pieces. It can work metals as tough as Titanium G5, steel and aluminum.

3D Printers

Transforms digital models into real life objects though a variety of additive fabrication techniques. A variety of materials, from soft plastics such as PLA to more resistant composites (chopped carbon fiber and fiberglass) and even flexible materials are available. We are also able to produce water tight objects by 3D printing with resins with different characteristics (strength, durability and biocompatibility).

Baking Station

For the post processing of printed objects or circuit boards we have UV ovens (heated and non-heated), a pressurized lab oven and an ultrasonic cleaner.

CNC Router

Allows cut metal sheets (and other materials) of larger dimensions and even at different depths, making it an invaluable tool for producing larger prototypes.

Electronic Stations

Allow for electronic prototyping and testing and are equipped with soldering iron, heat guns, digital microscopes, programmable power supplies, oscilloscopes and waveform generators.

Laser Cutter

Uses a CO2 laser to cut through plastic, acrylic, wood, glass, leather, fabrics, brick, granite, bone, tile, marble, melamine, phenolic and others. It allows you to work with larger pieces and can also be used for engraving.

Manual Power Tools

Includes drill press, table saw, angle grinders, cutters, measuring tools, and more.

Pick and Place with Reflow Oven

Robotic circuit assembly machine for surface mounted circuits. In conjunction with the reflow oven, it provides one method for PCB manufacturing.

Pro 2x 3D scanner

Renders real objects into 3D models with high accuracy (up to 40 microns). It is also able to obtain information on textures and colors. This device is often used to make modifications on existing parts without having to design from scratch.

V-One PCB Printer

Prints circuit boards with with different techniques. The turnaround time, from design to a fully assembled board, is reduced from a few weeks to a few hours.

Vertical Mill

Allows for machining metal pieces with ease.

Voltera NOVA

The world’s first Printed Circuit Board printer for soft, stretchable or flexible electronics. It is able to print on any surface (even uneven ones), which allows for the creation of printed circuit structures, and fully customizable sensors.
