Bryce Lane presents "Ten Tips to Better Gardening: Southern Style". Whether you are new to gardening, new to gardening in the South, or just looking to improve your gardening skills, this talk will provide tips that will help you master gardening in the Southeast. First, we will identify the major advantages and disadvantages to gardening in a southern region?
This beginner class is for people with a Canon digital camera who are interested in learning how to successfully use their camera beyond automatic/program modes. The class concentrates on the five essential camera settings that have the most impact on the look of a photograph: focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. We also discuss how to interpret the image histogram, a camera feedback mechanism, and use that information to adjust and optimize image exposure for the next shot.
Join camellia enthusiast, propagator, and grower Brie Arthur for a morning discussion on the southern favorite, camellia. In this three-hour virtual session, Brie will share insights on how to cultivate camellias in zones 7–9 for high impact interest through the fall, winter, and spring. Divided into three sections, with breaks, the first hour will be devoted to fall-blooming species, like Camellia sasanqua. The second hour will cover winter-blooming varieties of Camellia japonica. The final hour will be devoted to site selection, soil improvement, fertility needs, pruning, and home propagation methods.
Tekan Rana (MHS Seminar). Muscadines (Vitis rotundifolia) are the native grape to the Southeast, traditionally used as a fresh market snack and for wine production. Before prohibition, North Carolina (NC) was the largest wine-producing state in the US, mostly shouldered by a large commercial muscadine industry. Today, the largest winery at the East Coast is Duplin Winery, which produces more than 450,000 cases of muscadine wine every year.
In this six-week installment of "Gardens of the World" we will travel to some of my favorite gardens in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Come visit Claude Monet's garden in Giverny France, beautiful island villa gardens of Northern Italy, some of the most stunning gardens along the Mediterranean, and so much more. As we tour these gardens, I'll identify gardening lessons we can learn and apply in our own gardens!
The new year is a couple months away, but the 2020 growing season has come to an end. Here in the South, the first frost of the season brings the demise of many plants, but for some,, the cooler weather ushers in a new growing season for those plants that grow in cooler temperatures. Tour around the JC Raulston Arboretum's grounds virtually as Doug shows us some of his favorite cool-weather plants.
