Abstract: North Carolina has a robust and productive history as a diverse agricultural state for hundreds of years, yet changing times pose strong challenges for farming in NC.  The Coastal Plain will likely continue to be strongly agricultural, but much of the Piedmont and Mountain Regions are facing strong development pressure while also spawning a strong direct-to-consumer-based new and transitioning farmer movement.  We will review the contributing factors related to farmland access and affordability challenges for new and diversifying farmers across the state.  Farm families are increasingly facing land legacy questions related to farm transition that supports long-term family heritage.  Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Farmers are also seeing opportunities despite documented discrimination rooted in slavery and Jim Crow Era oppressive policies.  Learn about how the NC State Extension | NC FarmLink Program offers options and resources to landowners and farm seekers through the strong network of extension agents in all 100 county centers and the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
