Abstract:
North Carolina has held a dominant position in the U.S. sweetpotato industry since the release of ‘Covington’ more than 15 years ago, Our competitive advantage over other states in the U.S. and abroad has been, in large part, directly related to the release of a cultivar that yields well, has good uniformity and great overall quality.  Key agronomic production requirements such as optimum planting density (number plants/acre), harvest timing and effective weed management can help maximize crop yield and quality of new clones. We propose to investigate in-row and between-row spacing of several sweetpotato clones, effect of planting method, harvest timing and plant orientation on overall yield and quality, evaluation of flumioxazin (PRE) and s-metolachlor (POST) based on plant orientation and evaluation of chelated iron as an herbicide safener in sweetpotato.
