Summary:
The NC State Extension Master Gardener program recruits, trains, and engages local residents to serve as volunteer educators who strengthen Extension’s delivery of horticultural knowledge to North Carolinians. As the Extension Master Gardener (EMG) program state coordinator, I provide guidance, leadership, support, and continuing education opportunities to a network of Extension horticulture agents and staff, and over 3,000 Master Gardener volunteers based in 84 N.C. Cooperative Extension county centers across the state to achieve our mission of connecting people to horticulture through science-based education and outreach. I will discuss insights gained during my 21-year career with NC State Extension, from my time as a local Extension horticulture agent to my current role as EMG program state coordinator, as well as share priorities, goals, and opportunities for engagement that will ensure the EMG program will continue to grow healthy plants, people, and communities today and for the future.
