International Congress of Entomology winners announced

The International Congress of Entomology is held every four years. This year, it was co-located with the  Entomological Society of America’s annual meeting. Over 6,500 entomologists from around the world came to Orlando, FL, Sept. 25 -30, making the conference the largest gathering of entomologists to date.

Students competed with their peers in both oral and poster competitions. Several NC State faculty attended the Grand Challenges Entomology Leadership Summit, where Dr. Fred Gould gave a plenary lecture.

Winners from NC State’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology were:

  • Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology: Coby Schal
  • Early Career Professional Extension Award: Lauren Diepenbrock
  • Lillian and Alex Feir Graduate Student Travel Award in Insect Physiology, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology: Zachary DeVries
  • Student debates 1st Place & Best Overall: Johanna Elsensohn, Nicole Gutzmann, Sophia Webster, and Jennifer Baltzegar
  • Oral student competition winners: 1st Place: Zach DeVries, Kristi Backe and Jean Marcel Degeunon; 2nd place: Colin Funaro, Sarah Parsons, Michael Fisher and Lawrence Long
