AHS Welcomes, Awards, Recognitions, and Farewells

We are so thankful for our AHS family! Today we would like to express proper gratitude by acknowledging the many achievements made by our phenomenally hardworking faculty and staff. We would also like to send proper goodbyes to our AHS colleagues, whose time has come to a close. We wish them all the best and can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.

Welcomes

• Dr. Andrew Smolski joined the department in February as a Research Scholar working with Michael Schulman on the RAFI/SARE Navigating Financial and Emotional Hardship Project.
• Alyssa Anderson joined the Steps to Health team on January 10 as their Social Marketing and Evaluation Extension Associate.
• Candace Hackney joined the Project YES! team on January 31 as their Mentor Program Manager.
• Zachary Hackney joined the EFNEP team on March 1 as a Program Associate EFNEP (Youth).

Awards and Recognition

• Dr. Maru Gonzalez and her team recently published a first-of-its-kind study that revealed a gap between knowledge and skills of 4-H professionals in engaging and developing programs for LGBTQ+ youth in 4-H across North Carolina.
• Congratulations to Dr. Lindsey Haynes-Maslow who recently published an article on an online intervention pilot for the grocery purchasing habits among rural and urban residents in the journal International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
• Congratulations to Dr. Travis Park and Dr. Wendy Warner who recently published an article on the importance of meaningful collaboration between agricultural education (AE) and environmental education (EE) frameworks in the journal Environmental Education Research.
• The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences is proud to announce that Youth, Family, and Community Sciences is one of six graduate programs at NC State to have been selected as an honoree for NC State’s Excellence in Assessment awards by the Graduate School.
• The team of Dr. Maru Gonzalez, Becca Zuvich and Chris Genwright were awarded a Group Recipient Award as part of the Equity for Women Awards celebration.
• Dr. Harriett Edwards and her team has been awarded one of the largest grants in department history, over $29 million over the next 5 years, by the U.S. Navy to manage and deliver a vast program of youth education and recreation programs.

Farewells

• After 32 years with NCSU-Cooperative Extension, Sue Estridge has retired as an Area Extension Agent in Family and Consumer Sciences. Thank you for your dedication over the years and good luck with your next adventure.
