Dr. Lorena Lopez’s program centers on the sustainable management of pests affecting small fruits and tobacco through integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Her extension work involves translating complex scientific findings into practical applications for growers and extension agents, focusing on reducing pesticide reliance and enhancing crop health and productivity. Her research includes leading collaborative projects on managing major pest complexes, including invasive pests such as mites and thrips across the U.S., and developing novel IPM strategies. Dr. Lopez’s efforts aim to empower growers with the tools and knowledge to tackle pest challenges effectively while promoting environmental sustainability in agricultural practices.

 

Dr. Lorena Lopez is an Extension Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology (DEPP) at North Carolina State University. She specializes in integrated pest management (IPM) for small fruits, and tobacco, and focuses on developing sustainable pest control strategies. She earned her Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Florida, where she also completed her Master’s, deepening her expertise in vegetable entomology.

Since starting at NC State in 2024, Dr. Lopez has been proactive in extension outreach, equipping growers with effective, research-based strategies to combat agricultural pests. Her previous roles include postdoctoral positions at Virginia Tech and the University of Florida, enhancing her applied entomological research and extension skills. Her work has earned honors, such as the Early Career Professional Extension Outreach and Engagement Award from the EB-ESA. Dr. Lopez is actively involved in significant research projects aimed at evaluating novel insecticides and miticides in combination with cultural practices while promoting environmental sustainability. She is also actively involved with the Acarological Society of America, contributing extensively to advancing acarology and supporting agricultural communities through innovative IPM solutions.
