Advisory Board for Strategic Excellence and Well-being

The CALS Advisory Board for Strategic Excellence & Well-being (SEWB) is a dynamic council of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to addressing key issues and shaping the future of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The SEWB Advisory Board provides recommendations to the Dean in the implementation of the university and college’s strategic plan in furtherance of the university’s You Belong Here initiatives, for all levels of our community. Focusing on employee experience and student success, the recommendations are meant to reinforce the mission of creating a place where all members of our community can thrive.

Our Mission

The Advisory Board is committed to recruiting, retaining, and investing in the people who make up our college. Guided by the NC State Strategic Plan, the Board brings together diverse perspectives from across our community to:

  • Foster a culture of belonging and well-being that values every individual’s contribution and supports their growth and development.
  • Enhance communication within CALS to build strong connections across all departments, initiatives, and Extension programs.
  • Prepare a career-ready workforce by offering professional development, networking opportunities, and mentorship that equip our community for the challenges of a 21st-century global world.

These goals are woven into every aspect of CALS, ensuring excellence in student success, employee experience and community.

How We Operate

The Advisory Board reports directly to the CALS Dean and is composed of representatives selected from across the college’s diverse community. The Board meets monthly to focus on the priorities outlined in the CALS Strategic Plan, emphasizing the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.

Members of the Advisory Board are committed to dedicating at least 10 hours per month outside of their regular duties to advance the Board’s initiatives. This includes forming subcommittees to create and implement action plans in three key areas:

  • Student Strategic Excellence
  • Staff and Faculty Excellence
  • Community, Climate and Culture

Our Commitment

The Advisory Board’s work is grounded in the belief that a strong, supportive community is essential for achieving excellence. By fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and connected, we are building a resilient and agile CALS community that can adapt and thrive as we grow and evolve.
