Third Year

Prerequisite coursework as per CVM NCSU:
Junior Fall; PY 211 or PY 205
Junior Spring;  PY 212 or PY 208 + GN 311/312

NOTE: You must check the prerequisite course requirements of each Veterinary School that you plan to apply to and ensure that you have incorporated ALL required courses for these institutions in your undergraduate education. Each Veterinary School has different prerequisite courses, and these can change. It is recommend to check them at least once per semester.

Fall Semester:

  • Review the course pre-requisites for the Veterinary Schools you are planning to apply to and verify that you are on track to meet all pre-requisite course requirements. Remember that the prerequisite course requirements of each Veterinary School are different and may have changed since you last reviewed your career map
  • Considering attending the North Carolina Veterinary Conference in November to network with local practitioners and look for local opportunities

Spring semester:

  • Pre-veterinary students that do not want to take a gap year will begin working on their VMCAS in this semester to meet the fall deadline (Sept 15th)
  • Most Veterinary School pre-requisites must be completed by the conclusion of this semester or during the coming summer months. Typically, Veterinary Schools only allow two courses to be incomplete by the end of the application cycle (fall semester senior year). These remaining two courses are to be completed in the spring semester of senior year.
  • Students should consider gaining a leadership position within their extracurricular activity of interest if they have not gained prior leadership experience
  • Consider registering for and attending the American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association Annual Symposium to tour US Vet Schools, network with other pre-veterinary students across the nation, and explore lab opportunities unavailable at NC State
  • Note-  This is the year when PreVeterinary track students should start preparing for the GRE very seriously and schedule the GRE test online at a suitable date.

Summer:

  • Take remaining Vet School prerequisite course requirements as summer classes
  • Diversify your clinical experiences- exotic, aquatic, shelter, etc.
  • Participate in VMCAS Advising with the VetPAC Director
  • Engage in pre-veterinary study abroad courses-https://cals.ncsu.edu/vetpac/study-abroad/
  • Students also should take this time to contact prospective writers of their letters of recommendation so as to give these individuals plenty of time to complete the necessary documents.
