SUMMER 2026
Coy West
I worked in Dr. Nishijima’s Laboratory of Avian Biosciences with my mentor Masato Konishi, where researchers investigate the nature of primordial germ cells (PCGs) and their application in the cloning and genetic modification of birds. I produced a plasmid incorporating multiple areas of control, including a hammerhead ribozyme and the Tet-On system, for later use in the research of chicken PCGs. I gained lots of experience in essential laboratory techniques, such as Gibson Assembly, PCR, competent cell transformation, gel electrophoresis, and digestion of DNA. I also got to explore in and around Nagoya, visiting the Higashiyama Zoo, Osu Street, Arimatsu, Ise, and Nagoya Castle with friends I made in my laboratory.
