Edgar Oviedo and participants of the 2019 Poultry Nutrition Short Course

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science and the Oviedo lab offer workshops and courses that provide up-to-date information about poultry science to promote student learning and the development of the poultry industry.

The information is based on management techniques from the different categories of poultry science, scientific studies, and mathematical and operational modeling to improve data management using big data analytics. The objective has been to improve the economic efficiency of companies and to update technical and scientific information.

International Seminar Participation

PSA Annual Meeting 2018 and International Poultry Scientific Forum 2020

In 2018 and 2020, Gustavo Quintana and Maria Camila Alfaro participated in the International Poultry Scientific Forum (IPSF) and Poultry Science Association (PSA) conferences representing NC State University.

In January, Gustavo presented the results of a research project titled “Effects of Broiler Breeder Dietary Amino Acid Levels During Rearing on Broiler Progeny Live Performance, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality.”

Maria Camila presented “Nutritional Strategies For Cobb 500 Broilers To Maximize Profitability And Carcass Yield.”

Nexo Global Agreement – Visiting Scholars

North Carolina State University and Universidad del Tolima have been part of the “Nexo Global Program” sponsored by Partners of the Americas with its program 100,000 Strong in the Americas.

With this agreement, several students from Colombia have had the opportunity to participate in an international exchange to the U.S., to work under the direction of Dr. Edgar Oviedo in Oviedo’s lab on the NC State University campus.

The program’s objective is to promote poultry science education, allowing students to develop the skills necessary for research and poultry management in different fields that have been studied in Oviedo’s lab. Students in this program are continuously in contact with the American poultry industry to learn more and apply those concepts in their home country.

Finally, the students have participated in diverse cultural activities to facilitate the practice of communication skills in English as a second language.
