Bio

Academic Advisor: Dr. Edgar O. Oviedo-Rondon

Caleb Marshall was born and raised in Greenville, MS, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. He attended Mississippi State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Poultry Science with a Pre-Veterinarian concentration in 2021. During his undergraduate career, he worked in several laboratories assisting with research under the advisement of Dr. Kelley Wamsley (Applied Poultry Nutrition), Dr. Wei Zhai (Basic/Applied Poultry Nutrition), and Dr. Li Zhang (Molecular Biology). In 2021, he started as a Master student under Dr. Kelley Wamsley, conducting several poultry nutrition research trials and obtained a Certificate of Excellence in Research at the 2023 International Poultry Scientific Forum for his abstract presentation “Sample size, selection criteria, and personnel impact on processing variance in nutrition research.” In the summer of 2023, he successfully defended his Master of Agriculture thesis entitled “Advancing poultry nutrition through statistical strategies to reduce experimental variation and novel protease enzyme research.” Prior to starting his Ph.D. program, he joined the H. Stein Swine Nutrition Lab and the C. Parson Monogastric Nutrition Lab (University of Illionis, Champaign-Urbana). During his time at Illinois, he improved his understanding of nutrient utilization and digestibility, extending his knowledge of nutrition to both pigs and poultry. In January of 2024, Caleb joined the E. Oviedo Lab at North Carolina State University, in pursuit of a Ph.D. in Poultry and Nutrition Sciences and a minor in statistics. While at NCSU his research is focused on Precision Nutrition, with an emphasis on Feed Formulation, Sustainability, and Ingredient Nutrient Variability. Caleb is an enthusiastic poultry scientist with a passion to develop his skills to analyze, visualize, and interpret real-world poultry production data and develop novel decision-making tools that quickly react to changing production and market conditions.

Area(s) of Expertise

Currently, my research is focused on Precision Nutrition and Sustainability, through optimizing nutrient adequacy in feed through various methods of feed formulation. This involves incorporating sustainability models to ensure efficient and environmentally conscious poultry production. My work aims to advance the understanding of how precise nutrient formulations can improve poultry health, productivity, and overall industry sustainability. Additionally, I aim to integrate advanced data science techniques and machine learning models in poultry nutrition - leveraging modern analytics tools to improve poultry production.
