Undergraduate Programs

We offer hands-on experience, a popular minor and a wide array of courses to choose from.

While we do not currently offer any undergraduate majors, our Entomology minor is taken by 80+ students across 20 departments and 6 colleges at NC State.

We also offer undergraduate courses in entomology and plant pathology that can help students fulfill program requirements and complement their interests. Many of our courses are included in curricula of the Agricultural Institute where students can gain two-year degrees and certificates.

Research, Teaching, and Internship Experiences for Credit

Both courses allow up to 6 credits, require sophomore standing or higher, and can be taken during any term. Students must complete the Course Contract with their faculty mentor or off-campus supervisor and submit it to the Director of Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Terri Billeisen.

492/493 Course Contract

ENT/PP 492: External Learning Experience

A learning experience within an academic framework that utilizes facilities and resources external to the NC State campus. Contact and arrangements with prospective employers/supervisors must be initiated by the student. 

ENT/PP 493: Special Problems in ENT/PP

A learning experience within an academic framework that utilizes campus facilities and resources. Contact and arrangements with prospective faculty mentors must be initiated by the student. 

Entomology Minor

Intended for students who are interested in insects and their diversity, ecology, behavior, management, and their role in the functioning of natural and agricultural ecosystems.

1 required course + 4 electives = 15 semester hours

PP 222: Kingdom of Fungi, is a popular course for students across several colleges (offered in-person and online).

Plant protection requirement in Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticultural Science and Forestry and Environmental Resources can be fulfilled by:

  • PP 315: Principles of Plant Pathology (4 credit hours)
  • PP 318: Forest Pathology (3 credit hours)

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Office of Undergraduate Research at NC State hosts spring and summer symposia as opportunities for undergraduate students to showcase their research with an oral/poster presentation.
