CALS Scholarships FAQs
How do I apply for CALS scholarships?
Current and admitted CALS undergraduate and AGI students apply through PACK ASSIST, NC State’s scholarship portal. Complete the General Application and the CALS conditional application, as well as any supplemental questions that you are prompted to do. Your application will automatically be matched to scholarships for which you meet the eligibility criteria. For maximum consideration, submit your application by the priority deadline, February 15 each year.
Do I need to submit a separate application for every scholarship?
No. Most CALS scholarships do not require a separate application. Once you complete the General Application and any required supplemental applications, PACK ASSIST automatically matches you with scholarships for which you qualify. Some opportunities may appear under “Recommended Opportunities” and require additional information.
Do I need to apply every year?
Yes. Scholarship applications are not carried over from year to year. All continuing students should complete a new PACK ASSIST application annually, and as soon as possible after December 1 each year, to be considered for scholarships.
Is the FAFSA required?
Not always. However, some scholarships have a financial need component, so submitting the FAFSA by NC State’s priority deadline is strongly encouraged to maximize your scholarship eligibility. Filling out the FAFSA is highly recommended even if you do not believe you will qualify.
What does the scholarship committee consider?
Selection criteria vary by scholarship and donor intent. Committees may consider factors such as:
- Academic achievement
- Financial need
- Major or intended major
- Leadership and campus involvement
- Career goals
- Community service
- Residency or county of residence
- Other donor-specific criteria
Not every scholarship considers all of these factors.
When will I know if I received a scholarship?
Scholarship notifications are sent throughout the spring and summer as selection committees complete their reviews. If selected, you will receive an email directing you to log into PACK ASSIST to view and accept your award. You will also need to accept the award in MyPack Portal. You must accept or decline your scholarship(s) as soon as possible.
Can I update my application after I submit it?
Yes. You may return to your PACK ASSIST application to make updates while the application remains open. Please note that some changes may impact your eligibility.
What if my major changes?
Your eligibility for some scholarships may change if you switch majors. Be sure to update your academic information in MyPack Portal and complete your annual PACK ASSIST application with your current major. Be sure to check with your academic advisor and email [email protected] to verify if changing your major will affect your CALS scholarships.
If I receive a scholarship one year, will it automatically renew?
Not necessarily. Some scholarships are renewable, while others are one-time awards. Renewal depends on the scholarship’s terms, available funding, and whether you continue to meet eligibility requirements. Renewal is never guaranteed unless specifically stated in your award notification.
Can transfer students apply?
Yes. Admitted transfer students are encouraged to complete the PACK ASSIST application and will be considered for scholarships for which they are eligible.
Can international students apply?
Many CALS scholarships are open to international students, while others are limited by citizenship or residency requirements. PACK ASSIST will automatically match you with scholarships for which you are eligible.
What should I include in my scholarship essays?
Answer each prompt thoughtfully and honestly. Scholarship reviewers want to learn about your experiences, goals, leadership, challenges you’ve overcome, and why you’re pursuing your chosen field. Strong essays are specific, personal, well-written, and are not generated using AI.
I received a scholarship. What happens next?
If you’re selected:
- Log into PACK ASSIST to accept your scholarship.
- Complete any required post-acceptance forms or thank-you activities.
- Continue meeting the scholarship’s academic and enrollment requirements.
- Watch your NC State email for additional instructions.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
If you have questions about CALS scholarships or the application process, please contact the CALS Scholarship Office at [email protected]. For questions about financial aid or FAFSA, contact the NC State Student Services Center at [email protected].
