Southeast Extension professionals experience Latino immersion in North Carolina

No international borders were crossed, but a recent journey across cultures was an eye-opening and life-changing experience for a group of Extension professionals. A spirit of “bienvenidos” permeated the week, as North Carolina’s Latino community welcomed Extension participants from five southern states for a new professional development program.

N.C. Research Campus, Davidson College students collaborate on blueberry genome sequencing project

Dr. Allan Brown, assistant professor with N.C. State University’s Plants for Human Health Institute at the N.C. Research Campus, is leading the effort to sequence the blueberry genome. Seven Davidson College undergraduates, in a course led by biology professor Dr. A. Malcolm Campbell, have been given a sneak peek at a portion of the berry’s DNA.

New plant breeding technology is topic of Wernsman Lecture

Geoff Graham, senior director of North America Maize Product Development for Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., will deliver the 11th annual Earl A. Wernsman Seminar on April 8, 2 p.m., in 216 Mann Hall, N.C. State University. The student-arranged lecture is sponsored by the Crop Science Graduate Student Association.

Louws to direct Center for Integrated Pest Management

Dr. Frank Louws has been named director of N.C. State University's Center for Integrated Pest Management. Louws is a professor of plant pathology and has been a faculty member at N.C. State since 1996. He earned a doctorate from Michigan State University, as well as bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Guelph in Canada.

Nagy is Caldwell County Extension director

Seth N. Nagy, an agricultural Extension agent in Caldwell County, has been named director of the N.C. Cooperative Extension center there, effective Feb. 1. Nagy’s appointment was announced by Caldwell County Manager Stan Kiser and Dr. Joe Zublena, director, N.C. Cooperative Extension Service.
