Seminars to Address Herbicide Resistance

A new seminar series from NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will shed light this semester on the challenges farmers face with herbicide-resistant weeds.

The three-part series will include lectures by nationally prominent weed scientists who are CALS alumni.

“Resistance has become a big issue in agriculture. Farmers only have so many options, and we are running out of them quickly,” said Dr. David Jordan, a CALS weed scientist who helped organize the series. “Our speakers will bring unique and complementary perspectives on challenges and sustainable solutions to managing weeds in diverse landscape systems.”

On Sept. 1, Dr. Rex Liebl of BASF Corp. will discuss “Possibilities for New Target Sites for Herbicides.”

On Oct. 6, Dr. Dave Mortensen of Penn State University will address “How Does Weed Ecology and Biology Inform Sustainable Weed Management.”

And on Nov. 10, Dr. Stanley Culpepper of the University of Georgia will speak on “Developing and Maintaining a Sustainable Tool Box to Manage Weeds.”

Each of the lectures will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Washington Sankofa Room in NC State’s African American Cultural Center, with refreshments at 3 p.m.

The series is designed to be an annual event that includes three to five lectures from a broad spectrum of weed scientists. It is named the Dr. Arch Douglas Worsham Weed Science Lecture Series, in honor of a now retired scientist who had a distinguished career at NC State, making contributions in witchweed management, no-tillage systems and other important aspects of sustainable weed management.
