Seminar: “Canopy Perspectives: Unveiling microgeographic responses to global change” with Brett Scheffers
November 2, 2023 | 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
Speaker: Brett Scheffers (https://www.schefferslab.com/)
Abstract: Within forest ecosystems, animal communities vertically organize and partition, creating intricate layers of species interactions. The gradients in climate, habitat, and resources created by the vertical structure of vegetation offer an excellent model system for understanding the interplay between abiotic and biotic factors in shaping community composition. These local micro-gradients often exhibit greater steepness than other well-known gradients, such as elevation and latitude. In my seminar, I will explore the pivotal role of microgeography in shaping broader patterns of biogeography, particularly in the context of global change. Furthermore, I will delve into the critical factors of water availability and biotic interactions, shedding light on their roles in driving the vertical collapse of assemblage complexity in response to climate change.
