Mary Kate Lanier Recognized as Outstanding New Advisor by NACADA

Mary Kate Lanier, academic advisor for the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences (AHS), was selected as an Outstanding New Advisor – Primary Role Certificate of Merit Award Winner as part of the 2024 Global Awards Program for Academic Advising from NACADA: The Global Network for Academic Advising. This award is presented to advisors who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as a professional advisor for a period of three (3) or fewer years.

The award will be presented during a ceremony at the NACADA Annual Conference in Pittsburgh.  More details on this award category may be found here.

Katie Sanders, assistant professor in the AHS Department who nominated Mary Kate, highlighted not only the sheer number of students she advises but also the supportive culture she has fostered within the department. “Mary Kate always provides an open space for her students to discuss any academic struggles they may be experiencing. As an instructor, she helps me stay aware of what is happening with my students, especially those needing additional flexibility to ensure their success. Her care and empathy for every advisee are evident,” Sanders stated.

As the newest faculty member in the department, Sanders frequently sought Lanier’s advice about the degree programs. “She always has a ready answer to help me learn about my own role. I learn from her in so many ways, but especially about how to extend care and compassion into my classroom,” Sanders added.

Reflecting on her achievement, Lanier expressed her gratitude and passion for her work. “I truly believe I have the best job in the world, and the students are what truly make this my dream job. It is an immense privilege for a student to trust me with sharing their dreams for the future and the desires of their heart. I am so grateful to my students and colleagues who provided letters of support and nomination for this award. Accolades certainly aren’t everything, but this recognition from NACADA is so affirming that I am exactly where I need to be. Advising is truly a unique opportunity to make a difference in the world. It is my hope that I never lose sight of this tremendous opportunity.”
