Food Connects Us: Celebrating National Nutrition Month with EFNEP

The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences (AHS) publishes a monthly blog written by students, alumni, and faculty sharing important topics and helpful resources related to the fields of agriculture, extension, and human science. In the March blog post, AHS staff member Megan Halbohm focuses on National Nutrition Month and how food connects us all.

It’s that time of year again! No, we’re not talking about March Madness; we are talking about National Nutrition Month! Each March, folks across the country celebrate nutrition all month long, emphasizing the importance of making informed food choices, developing healthy eating habits, and engaging in physical activity. This year’s theme is “Food Connects Us.”

A common denominator amongst us all is the need to eat. For the vast majority of people, food is not just fuel; it is an experience to be enjoyed. It is woven into our traditions, cultures, and social gatherings. Whether it’s a wedding, a sporting event, a birthday, a meeting, a holiday, or even a funeral, food brings people together in meaningful ways.

Think about some of your most cherished memories. Chances are, many of them involve food. Perhaps it was a holiday meal shared with family, a favorite dish passed down through generations, or a potluck with friends and neighbors. Food not only nourishes our bodies but also strengthens relationships, fosters community, and provides comfort during difficult times.

One program that highlights the power of food to connect and educate is the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) at NC State. If you have ever attended an EFNEP class, you have likely participated in a cooking or tasting component. These hands-on activities create an engaging learning experience while bringing participants together. Whether it’s preparing a new recipe, learning about nutrition labels, or discussing strategies for meal planning, gathering over food serves as both a learning opportunity and a social experience.

Just like snowflakes, no two EFNEP participants are quite the same. Our communities are made up of cultures, traditions, and experiences, all of which influence our eating habits and food choices. EFNEP recognizes this rich variety and embraces the opportunity to bring people together to share ideas, learn from one another, and work toward healthier lifestyles. In an EFNEP class, participants are not only learning about nutrition but also engaging in meaningful conversations, exchanging cooking tips, and gaining insight into different cultural food practices. It is this collective learning experience that makes the program so impactful.

By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, EFNEP empowers individuals and families to make informed choices about their health while celebrating the many ways food connects us all. Whether it’s a cooking demonstration, a grocery store tour, or a discussion about budget-friendly meals, EFNEP classes create a space where learning and connection go hand in hand.

This National Nutrition Month, take a moment to reflect on how food has shaped your life and how it connects you to the people around you. Consider trying a new recipe from a different culture, sharing a meal with friends, or even participating in a local nutrition education program like EFNEP. By embracing the idea that food connects us, we can build stronger communities, foster meaningful relationships, and create a healthier future for all.
