Yucky or yummy? New method developed by N.C. State researchers gauges kids’ liking of fruits and vegetables

Drs. Suzie Goodell and Virginia Carraway-Stage developed an innovative pictorial method to assess preschoolers’ liking of familiar fruits and vegetables. The project was featured in the journal Appetite in April 2014. In the months following publication, it has garnered national and international attention.

Pack football celebrates NC agriculture during second annual “Ag Day”

For a second consecutive year, NC State Athletics and its multimedia rights partner, Wolfpack Sports Properties, will pay tribute to agriculture in the state of North Carolina by hosting “Ag Day” festivities Sept. 5-6, 2014. The event culminates with Pack football taking on Old Dominion at 6 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium.

N.C. State University Turfgrass Field Day is Aug. 13

N.C. State University’s annual Turfgrass Field Day will be held in Raleigh at the Lake Wheeler Turfgrass Research Lab on Aug. 13. One of the largest events of its kind in the country, the field day offers the industry and general public a chance to view the Turfgrass Program’s ongoing research trials and speak directly with N.C. State faculty and staff.

New director named for Lincoln County Cooperative Extension

Thomas L. Dyson has been named to direct the North Carolina Cooperative Extension program in Lincoln County. Dyson’s appointment as Lincoln extension director was announced by Dr. Joe Zublena, director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University, and Tracy Jackson, Lincoln County manager.

NC State wins one of Obama’s “100,000 Strong” innovation grants

North Carolina State University is one of nine universities from throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America to win a “100,000 Strong in the Americas” innovation grant in the amount of $25,000, given by the U.S. Department of State; Partners of the Americas; and NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension has been changing lives for 100 years, and it’s time to celebrate. Extension personnel from throughout the state will converge in Raleigh on May 19 and 20 for festivities that will kick off with a celebratory dinner and culminate with a proclamation by Gov. Pat McCrory. Media are invited to attend both events.

Fifty years to the day after the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center was dedicated, the center is throwing a party, and all are invited to attend. The celebration and open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 17 at the center, which is located in Reidsville, N.C.
