USDA/NIFA HIGHER EDUCATION CHALLENGE (HEC) GRANTS PROGRAM:\

HEC is a NIFA-administered competitive grants program focused on improving formal, baccalaureate, or master’s degree level food, agricultural, natural resources, and human (FANH) science education, and first professional degree level education in veterinary medicine (DVM).  HEC supports social and behavioral science disciplines. Projects that integrate social and biological sciences are encouraged. Incorporation of social and behavioral sciences is important for addressing many of the challenges facing agriculture and rural communities, such as increasing global demand for food production in the face of limited natural resources; improving health and reducing obesity by engaging in heathy diets; and alleviating poverty by fostering economic opportunity.

TOWN OF CARY SEEKS NC STATE ASSISTANCE WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT:

Leah Burton, NC State’s Director of the Centennial Campus Partnership Office & Industry Alliances has shared to College Research Offices that the Town of Cary is interested in exploring partnership opportunities with NC State University to address issues with the town’s recycling program.

These issues are by no means specific to Cary and the development and application of any solutions would potentially have value far beyond just one community.

Cary currently has a short term contract with Waste Management(WM) to take their recycling.  Town of Cary trucks collect the recycling curbside and take it directly to a WM facility.  WM sorts the recycling, finds buyers for the materials they can, and the rest adds to the landfill.

Issues with recycling are many.  Much of it is contaminated and ends up in the landfill anyway.  Traditional markets for recycled materials are changing.

The Town of Cary is interested in looking at ways to improve the recycling process and, thereby, increasing the useful life of local landfills.

The Centennial Campus Partnership Office aims to organize a meeting with the Town of Cary and faculty interested in working with the town to develop approaches to solving this problem.

Faculty with interest in participating in this initiative are asked to reach out to Amy Lubas in the Partnerships unit via: aelubas@ncsu.edu, by January 14.
