CALS IT Reminders and Tips

It’s that time of year again — campus is buzzing with fresh energy and bright ideas as faculty and staff settle in for the new semester.

And whether it’s helping update a password or supporting classroom technology, CALS IT is here to make sure the new academic year gets off to a great start.

Here are a few tips to keep your technology running smoothly.

CALS Classroom Technology Support & Tips

To ensure maximum stability across our CALS instructional spaces, please notify the CALS Classroom Support Team of any technology issues you experience during instruction. Please refrain from adjusting the cabling or equipment inside the instructor’s station rack. Changes to these configurations can creade cascading effects that impact other instructors and classrooms, and may also make it harder for support staff to resolve the original issue.

To reach the CALS Classroom Support Team, email CALS_Facil@help.ncsu.edu, call the Help Line at (919) 515-6777, extension2, or submit a “Get Help” form through the CALS IT Service Portal.

How to Sync Your Unity Password with Your Mac

If you’ve recently updated your Unity password, your Apple computer may not automatically recognize the change. If your Mac seems “stuck” on your old password, follow these steps to manually sync it:

  1. While signed into your computer, click the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner. Search for and open Jamf Connect. Close the “Welcome to Jamf Connect” window that appears. (If nothing happened, continue to the next step.)
  2.  In the top-right menu bar, click the Jamf icon and select Connect…
  3. Enter your username as unityID@ncsu.edu and your new Unity password.
  4.  A second window will prompt for your previous (local) password. Enter your old password and click Sync.

Your Mac should now be synced with your updated Unity password and ready for use.

New User and Departing Member Requests

To efficiently manage permissions for CALS IT devices and resources, please provide timely notification prior to the arrival of new members to your department or unit.

New Users: Complete the New User Request Form to provide CALS IT with vital details, including the start date, office location and necessary application licenses or access requirements. This information greatly facilitates the onboarding process.

Departing Users: It is equally important to promptly inform CALS IT of any staff or faculty departures. Completing the Disable User Request Form ensures swift removal of access for departing members, maintaining security and efficiency within our IT infrastructure. Timely completion of these forms helps CALS IT keep devices and resources secure and accessible for your team.

Stay Alert for Phishing Emails

When you encounter an email that raises doubts or appears suspicious, it’s essential to verify the sender’s email address to confirm its legitimacy. If you receive an email from a sender you recognize, but it still seems questionable, consider sending a separate email to that individual to confirm if the message is legitimate.

If you are certain the email is a spam or phishing attempt, take immediate action by marking it as such. This helps protect both yourself and others from potential online threats. Staying vigilant and verifying suspicious emails is key to keeping your accounts and data secure. Read the Office of Information Technology’s tips on spotting email phishing.
