More than a dozen faculty have been involved with various research and extension projects in Malawi.
Recently, we have initiated plans to formalize a partnership with prominent institutions in Malawi
namely, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Malawi University of
Science and Technology (MUST) and Mzuzu University (MZUZU) as well as various Departments within
the Malawian Ministry of Agriculture.
Multiple experts from government agencies and universities as well as the Honorable Minister of
Agriculture participated as speakers in our Building Partnerships in East Africa held in Raleigh in
September 2023. During the symposium, teams consisting of Malawian experts and NC State
researchers identified some priority areas to address, including but not limited to mechanization of
agriculture, irrigation, among others. As follow up to the symposium, a group of CALS faculty visited
Malawi in 2024 to assess the problems on the ground and meet with a wide array of partners and
collaborators.
In addition, teams from Malawi visited N C State in November 2023 and August 2024. Currently, we are
working to form thematic teams consisting of both NC State and Malawian experts to address sector
specific constraints and design research programs, guided by the overarching principle to connect
agriculture research and extension components to effect sustainable development in the country.
Currently, we are working on signing an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and through an
effort led by our Malawi collaborators, we are finalizing a scope of work document to pursue
collaborative projects.
