Shwetha S. Ramanathan, President
Shwetha obtained her master’s degree in environmental science from the University of Mysore, India and is currently pursuing her PhD related to herbicide carryover effects on soybean crop in North Carolina. She strongly believes that the interdisciplinary exchange of scientific ideas can improve the translation of research from the bench to the field and guide agricultural innovations. CALS SAIGE gives her an opportunity to connect with dedicated individuals who have a vision for international development. She hopes that one day her scientific background and experiences will enable her to work with children in rural areas to inspire them with notions about sustainability, environmental protection and encourage cultural harmony.
Tim Kloppe, Treasurer
Tim is a Plant Pathology PhD student with a strong background in Agricultural Plant Sciences, investigating genetic resistance in wheat against fungal diseases. As much as crossing disciplines in science, he regards cultural awareness and international collaboration as a key to success. Different backgrounds of people and their perspectives can help develop holistic approaches to tackle future challenges, locally and globally.

I believe the stories behind the life of people from different part of the world will stimulate great ideas and motivation to challenge the current and future problems.”
Janel Louise Ohletz
Janel is a PhD student in Soil Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Science researching nutrient management in corn using remote sensing technology. She has M.S. in Agricultural Science and a B.S in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from the University of New Hampshire. She is deeply committed to working toward a more sustainable and equitable food system. Prior to returning to school, this classically trained chef worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years. She believes in making an impact by being part of the conversation, whether that be to advocate for a change in our food system or to help create professional development training that is more inclusive, robust and pertinent to the needs of today’s graduate students regardless of the career path.
Alejandro K. Llanos
Alejandro is an International student in Plant Pathology, originally from Lima, Peru. He conducted his undergrad at “La Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina – UNALM”, and has been at NC State University since 2018. Pursuing a dream is not easy.
