Student Spotlight: Oaks Leadership Scholar, Courtney Moore

Share a bit about your experience in the Oaks Leadership Scholars Program.

This program has transformed my perspective on the social injustices happening in the world.  I have learned how injustice lies rooted within many systematic layers of society; it does not stem from one person alone.  The program has also enabled me to become more involved in the social justice issues that I am most passionate about. The program has provided numerous resources and opportunities for personal growth.  I started the program without an extensive knowledge of social justice, and now know how to be an active advocator of social justice within my community.

How has the Oaks Leadership Scholars Program impacted your career, family and/or success?

The Oaks Leadership Scholars Program has allowed me to directly see what changes need to be made to promote a more just society, and shown me how I can be part of that change.  It has given me a platform to use when discussing social justice issues with my family and peers. Those conversations have undoubtedly made a positive impact, such as prompting their own involvement in social justice.  Conversations are very important when trying to initiate change because positive change begins when people recognize a need for change. A conversation as simple as asking someone their perspective and reasoning for that perspective can lead to powerful conversations/realizations.  In addition, I have been able to take a few of my peers with me to social justice excursions (such as workshops around campus), which has allowed me to see how my involvement in this program has promoted others to get involved in social justice work.

What would you like to share with others about your Oaks Leadership Scholars Program experience, any faculty, staff or peers that have made an impact on you in the program?

I would like to express my gratitude for each faculty member that has made this program possible.  I would also like to thank the current participants for being honest, actively engaged, and dedicated to personal growth.  The Oaks Leadership Scholars Program has provided numerous opportunities to build personal knowledge and promote direct involved in the community and around campus.  The program’s literary resources, monthly meetings, and cultural excursions have each positively impacted my journey through this program, and I am a better advocator for social justice because of that.

What’s next, how do you plan on using the Oaks Leadership Scholars Program experience in your future endeavors?

I plan to stay actively involved in social justice, primarily working with the issue of equal education and class.  I will continue to participate in service trips that work with impoverished areas/countries that do not have equal access to education.  Additionally, I will be active with my local legislation, and let my voice (along with others’) be heard through hosting postcard parties and contacting local legislators.  The Oaks Leadership Scholars Program has equipped me with the tools I need to continue fighting for social justice.
