Rooted in Tradition: From First-Gen Student to CALS Advocate
Karis Perry‘s journey into agriculture began in her childhood with her grandparents deeply influencing her. She fondly recalls summers spent in the garden with her grandfather, learning the intricacies of growing food, and preserving the harvest with her grandmother. These formative experiences cultivated a love for agriculture and a deep appreciation for the land, which naturally extended into her involvement in animal science through livestock and horse shows.
Perry’s decision to pursue agricultural education at NC State was solidified during a personalized visit that left a lasting impression. The genuine interest and warm reception from the staff, faculty, and professors made her feel valued and supported, not just as another prospective student, but as an individual with a unique background and story. This experience mirrored the nurturing environment she had grown up in, and she knew NC State was the right place for her.
Perry graduated in May 2022 with a degree in agricultural education, with a minor in animal science. As a first-generation college student, Perry encountered numerous challenges along her academic journey. These hurdles, however, only served to fortify her determination and deepen her appreciation for the perseverance and dedication required to achieve her educational goals. Her experience at NC State was profoundly transformative, extending far beyond the academic realm. It was here that Perry developed a close-knit community of friends and mentors who played a crucial role in her personal and professional growth. She expresses immense gratitude to key figures such as Joy Morgan, Wendy Warner, Susan Jones, Mary Kate Lanier, Mason Perry, her former roommates, friends within her major and bible study friends.
Perry is deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her family and all those who encouraged her throughout her college journey. This network of support was crucial in helping her overcome the challenges of being a first-generation student and in shaping who she is today. Her older brother, Kirby Haigler, was her biggest supporter and source of inspiration. A 2017 NC State graduate, Haigler had a significant influence on Perry, demonstrating through his involvement in Air Force ROTC, intramural sports, and various campus activities, the importance of seizing every opportunity that college life offers. Growing up as die-hard NC State fans, both siblings always knew that NC State was where they wanted to pursue their higher education. Perry stated “Kirby not only inspired me to pursue my dreams of attending NC State, but also to always look at the positives, keep smiling at others, and make the most out of each second of life.”
In her current role as the Recruitment Coordinator for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State, Perry has come full circle, sharing her experiences and passion for agriculture with prospective students. She takes pride in being the first point of contact for many young individuals, guiding them through the exciting and sometimes overwhelming process of choosing a college and field of study. Her work is particularly meaningful when she meets first-generation students, seeing in them a reflection of her own journey.
Perry believes she will continue making a positive impact on others’ lives. She envisions a future where she can leverage her experiences and insights to inspire and support others, just as her mentors and family have done for her. The role of recruitment coordinator, which seemed tailor-made for her, allows Perry to not only share the story of NC State’s impact on her life but also to help shape the experiences of the next generation of students.
Karis Perry embodies the spirit of NC State, where tradition, community, and education converge to create a lasting legacy. Her journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the support of a dedicated community.
