Exploring Spain through AEHS 590

It’s time to use your passport!

Spain: Culture & Community Engagement in Barcelona and the Camino de Santiago is a Maymester study abroad course aimed at fostering intercultural competence, community engagement, self-reflection, and a more global understanding of education and youth and community sciences in Barcelona and along Spain’s historic Camino de Santiago. Students will have the opportunity to learn about education, youth, and community issues within an international context and develop skills to effectively engage with diverse populations across cultural, geographical, and linguistic differences.

This course is open to graduate and undergraduate students in any discipline and is scheduled to be offered during Maymester 2025, between May 19th and June 2nd.

In this course, students will spend five days in Barcelona leading a community engagement and intercultural exchange project with local youth and connecting with partners at local non-profits and universities. We will then travel to Nájera to continue our culturally immersive and engaging experience as we walk a 60-mile section of Spain’s Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile hike that extends from France to Santiago de Compostela in the northwestern region of Spain.

From exploring the world-class city of Barcelona and participating in hands-on activities with community-based organizations to hiking along Spain’s historic Camino de Santiago, students will experience a wide variety of enriching excursions, including a tour of Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia — one of Spain’s top attractions. Camino’s vibrant cities and bucolic villages will also provide an abundance of engaging experiences, such as the archeological sites of Atapuerca, which contain fossil records from the earliest human beings in Europe.

This course fulfills the Global Knowledge requirement that undergraduates need to graduate.

This is also listed as one of the most affordable study abroad programs offered through NC State, costing $2,100 plus airfare, most meals, and incidentals.
