Requirements and Course Schedule
Doctoral Program
Core Theoretical and Research Courses (9 hours)
- AEHS 578 – Scientific Inquiry in AEHS (3 hours)
- AEHS 700 – Foundations of AEHS (3 hours)
- AEHS 809 – Colloquium in AEHS (3 hours, taken 1SCH/year)
- Note: students must have all three hours of AEHS 809 to graduate
Statistics Course Sequences (6 hours)
- ST 511 – Statistical Methods For Researchers I (3 hours)
- ST 512 – Statistical Methods For Researchers II (3 hours)
Additional Research Breadth Courses (6 hours)
Select at least two courses below:
- AEHS 777 – Qualitative Research Methods in Agricultural & Life Sciences (3 hours)
- AEHS 590 – Advanced Qualitative Methods (3 hours)
- ED 710 – Applied Quantitative Methods in Education I (3 hours)
- ED 730 – Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education (3 hours)
- ED 731 – Advanced Qualitative Research and Data Analysis in Education (3 hours)
Dissertation Research (12 hours)
Students will repeat the following course to meet 12 credit hours:
- AEHS 895 – Doctoral Dissertation Research (1-9 hours)
- AEHS 899 – Dissertation Preparation (final 3 hours)
Electives (42 hours)
- Elective Courses are determined in conjunction with the academic committee to meet the 72 total hours. Students would take elective credits in their area of specialization. Some examples of electives in each of the areas include:
- Family and Community Sciences – AEHS 502 – Theories in Family Science, AEHS 533 – Complex Family Issues, AEHS 525 – Family Relationships Across the Lifecourse; AEHS 553 – Applied Concepts in Child and Youth Development
- Agricultural Leadership Development – AEHS 550 – Leadership Theory; AEHS 560 – Organizational and Administrative Leadership in AEE, AEHS 565 – Community Leadership
- Agricultural Education – AEHS 523 – Adult Education in Agriculture, AEHS 535 – Teaching Agriculture in Secondary Schools; AEHS 705 – International Agricultural Development; AEHS 735 – Effective Teaching in Agriculture and Life Sciences
- Extension Education – AEHS 521 – Program Planning; AEHS 529 – Curriculum Development in AEHS; AEHS 554 – Introduction to Local Food Systems; AEHS 558 – Contemporary Issues in Volunteer Resource Management
A more thorough list of electives can be viewed on the master’s program page by clicking on each concentration area. Although it is not required, students can also declare a minor in another discipline. Students will need to take 12 hours in a specialty and work with a professor from that area.
AG*IDEA Courses and Tuition Waivers are Not Covered
Note that AG*IDEA courses in the AEHS master’s and doctoral programs cannot be covered by tuition waivers.
