Tyre Lanier named IFT Fellow

Dr. Tyre Lanier, professor of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists.

The institute is a leading advocate for food science and a catalyst for change around the world, educating the media and policy makers and working with governments to shape regulations.

The IFT Fellow designation is an honor bestowed on an IFT member by their peers, recognizing exemplary professionalism in the field of food science. In a given year, no more than 0.3 percent of the professional membership is eligible, and even fewer than that will receive the honor.

Lanier was named a fellow during the IFT annual meeting June 25-28 in Las Vegas.

According to the IFT, Lanier was recognized for “outstanding research and teaching contributions in muscle foods chemistry, translation of basic research into industrial practice and mentoring and training of future food scientists.”

An IFT announcement went on to say, “Lanier has made significant scientific achievements in surimi manufacturing. His work on the development of analytical methods to assess quality, the study of mechanisms of gelling and functional properties, use of ingredients and process technology to minimize freeze denaturation, technology transfer and the annual surimi school for practitioners has contributed to the success and growth of the industry. Lanier’s research on surimi manufacture and physical property evaluation has led to international recognition. His research, instruction, and outreach programs have contributed to a greater understanding of food composition and functional properties of fishery gels. He has been active in several IFT divisions by serving as symposium organizer, moderator, newsletter contributor, and manuscript reviewer. He has also devoted substantial time to students who have presented scientific papers and participated in the IFT Food Product Development competitions.”

The IFT has honored selected members as fellows since 1970. Lanier was one of 15 IFT Fellows named for 2012.
