N.C. 10% Campaign records $40 million in local food purchases

In just three years, the N.C. 10% Campaign, which encourages all North Carolinians and businesses to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on locally produced foods, has logged more than $40 million in expenditures. The campaign, which kicked off in July 2010, now counts more than 6,500 individuals and 850 businesses among its supporters.

Report: North Carolinians should eat more fruits and vegetables

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that North Carolinians aren't eating enough fruits or vegetables, but a growing number of farmers markets and other projects, some led by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and North Carolina Cooperative Extension, give us a chance to reverse the pattern.

Center for Environmental Farming Systems receives $3.9 million grant

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) has been awarded a five-year $3.9 million grant to build and evaluate supply chains for local farmers and fishers to supply large-scale markets in North Carolina. The grant was awarded by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

CEFS receives regional Magrath Award

Two North Carolina land-grant universities affiliated with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) – N.C. State University and N.C. A&T State University –were among those named regional winners of the C. Peter Magrath University Engagement Award for 2012, presented by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

Obituary: Ken Fager, CEFS research specialist

Ken L. Fager, 48, passed away Dec. 31. He was a researcher and educator at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems at N.C. State University. A native of Pennsylvania, Fager earned his bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Penn State University in 1984.
