N.C. State celebrates Morrill Act

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, N.C. State University will hold a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act, the original legislation that established land-grant universities like N.C. State. The celebration will be held at McKimmon Center, 3:45 -5:45 p.m.

President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act, on July 2, 1862, putting into action the idea that regardless of
economic status, a college education should be available to anyone with the ability and motivation to earn a degree. N.C. State University — then the N.C. College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts — was founded under this act 25 years later and is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

At the event, Chancellor Randy Woodson will introduce speaker Dr. Catherine Woteki, under secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Research, Education and Economics mission area, and the USDA’s chief scientist. Provost Warwick Arden will also explore N.C. State’s tradition of transformation and the university’s unique role as a premier research land-grant university focused on changing the state, nation and world. Woodson, Arden and Woteki will host a question-and-answer session following remarks.

A reception will follow the program, with a celebration cake and farm-to-fork food. The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact the special events office, 919.513.3915 or universityspecialevents@ncsu.edu.
