Zublena named to lead N.C. Cooperative Extension Service

Dr. Joe Zublena has been named associate dean for Extension in N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service effective immediately. Zublena, director of county operations for Cooperative Extension, has served as interim director of the organization since the May 1 retirement of past director Dr. Jon Ort.

N.C. Cooperative Extension employees were recognized during the annual meeting of Epsilon Sigma Phi’s Xi Chapter held in December. ESP is a professional development society for Cooperative Extension employees.

Sherman releases vermiculture book

Rhonda Sherman, solid waste Cooperative Extension specialist in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department, is co-editor of the first scientific book on vermicomposting. Vermiculture Technology: Earthworms, Organic Wastes, and Environmental Management was released this week by CRC Press.

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite” may seem like a trite outdated bedtime wish, but unfortunately it is becoming more real for home owners and institutions around the country. Bed bugs are back with a vengeance, and N.C. State University entomologists are looking for solutions to the problem and helping educate the public.

10% Campaign passes $2 million spent for local food

Since July, North Carolinians participating in the 10% Campaign have spent more than $2 million on food from local sources. The 10% Campaign is an effort of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems to educate and encourage consumers to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on locally sourced food.

North Carolina State University Extension specialists have now found an effective, inexpensive alternative to available commercial products to keep the deer at bay.
