N.C. Agromedicine Institute observes National Farm Safety and Health Week, Sept. 18-24

As fall harvest gathers momentum, the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute (NCAI) pauses to focus special attention on farm health and safety during National Farm Safety and Health Week, Sept. 18-24. The Institute’s mission is to develop solutions for agricultural hazards, collaborate on strategies for preventing injury and illness, and work with communities to promote health and safety through its research, education and intervention programs.

Students gain health profession skills in Nicaragua

Dr. Anita Flick, director of health professions advising, had planned to take a group of students to Haiti this summer, but political conditions there prevented the group from making the trip. Yet Flick was able to arrange a trip to Nicaragua, where students and medical professionals offered medical and dental care in a rural community.

Master Gardeners offer custom license plate

N.C. Master Gardeners Volunteer Association and N.C. State University have partnered to develop a North Carolina Master Gardener license plate. Legislation approving the new custom license plate was approved this summer by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Bev Perdue.

Stewart father and son both elected FFA presidents

On June 23, John Stewart of Knightdale was elected president of North Carolina’s FFA Organization – 30 years to the week that his father, Marshall Stewart, was elected state president of the same organization in 1981. They are believed to be the first father and son to serve as state FFA presidents for North Carolina.
