Franklin County hosts local foods meal, Sept. 2

Franklin County’s 2nd annual Local Food Roast Plate Sale will be Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. (or until sold out). The plate sale – part of the United Way of Franklin County Campaign Kick-Off – will be at the Farmers’ Market Shelter in Louisburg.

Plates are $8 each and will feature many locally raised foods, including barbeque pork ribs (Triple B Farms) with special sauce, sweet potatoes (Jones Family Farm), butterbeans (Wrenn Farm), corn bread and dessert. You may eat-in or drive-through. Beverages will be included with the meal for those who eat in.

Tickets will be sold throughout the community and are available at the Franklin County center of N.C. Cooperative Extension, Ribeye’s Restaurant, Farm Bureau, the UWFC office or from UWFC board of directors. Tickets must be redeemed by 4 p.m. to ensure availability, but patrons do not need a ticket to purchase a plate.

The funds raised will benefit the United Way of Franklin County and the Franklin County 4-H Poultry Judging Club, which will have volunteers working the event. There will be music throughout the day, and UWFC will be giving out prize bags every half hour. Just put your phone number on the ticket when you get a plate for the drawings.

Also, there will be a “Kiss A Pig” contest for children ages 3-15. Children can write to UWFC and respond to: “Why My _________________ Should Kiss A Pig.” There will be three prizes of $50 each to the top three answers, and the person who is named will be brought to the Farmers’ Market to “Kiss A Pig,” a piglet loaned by Mae Farm of Louisburg.
