Dec. 1 is deadline for incubator farm project

Dec. 1 is the deadline to apply for the Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ (CEFS) Incubator Farm Project. Through this project, CEFS will partner with communities to develop public lands (under ownership/long-term control of a county, municipal, or state agency) into places that incubate new farm enterprises to support the future of North Carolina’s local food system.

Borlaug Lecture focuses on Costa Rican sustainability

The sixth Borlaug lecturer – Dr. Julio Cesar Calvo Alvardo – had an important connection to N.C. State University: He earned his doctorate in forestry here in 1991 and went on to become president of one of Costa Rica’s most prestigious universities, said Dr. Dan Robison, associate dean of the College of Natural Resources.

Students learn to prepare simple meals In the catering kitchen of Talley Student Center, seven N.C. State University students chop green beans, green onions and fish fillets to prepare a meal that they will cook in two pots with steamer baskets. Tonight’s Cook Smart, Eat Smart class objective is steam cooking.

Register now for Nov. 17 ESP meeting

Registration is now underway for the Nov. 17 annual meeting of Epsilon Sigma Phi, XI Chapter. The meeting will be held at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost of the meeting is $25, and a registration form is available on the XI Chapter website.

AgrAbility Program receives new funding

Dr. Jimo Ibrahim, The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University's farm safety, energy and environmental specialist, is also the project director for the North Carolina AgrAbility Program, which was recently awarded $718,000 by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to provide training and assistance to farmers with disabilities or long-term health conditions that are barriers to work in production agriculture.

CEFS initiative will support new incubator farms

Up to five North Carolina communities will receive support for developing incubator farms to attract new farmers, thanks to an effort by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems. Incubator farms provide aspiring farmers with a place to learn, try their hand at farming and develop the markets to make their own operations successful.

Pollinator garden shows off fall color

As the sun sets on a bright October day in Chatham County, Agricultural Extension Agent Debbie Roos leads a group of 10 on a tour of the Pollinator Paradise Garden at Chatham Mills, a renovated facility that is home to the Chatham Marketplace cooperative and other clients. Roos hosts the monthly tours throughout the garden’s growing season, and each month, the garden is different, she says.

Costa Rican institute president will deliver 2011 Borlaug Lecture

Dr. Julio César Calvo Alvarado, rector (president) of Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica, will deliver the 2011 Borlaug Distinguished Lecture on Global Service to Society and Environment at N.C. State University on Oct. 31. The event is open to the campus community and will be followed by a reception and an open circle discussion with Calvo.

Small Farms Week will be celebrated March 25-31

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina A&T State University will host its annual Small Farms Week celebration for 2012 on March 25-31. Small Farms Week is designed to highlight the work of and show appreciation to the state’s small, part-time, limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged farmers. The theme for this year’s activities is focused on local foods and the role small farmers play in this effort.
