North Carolina communities receive planning support for incubator farms

Several North Carolina communities will receive support in establishing incubator farms, thanks to the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) and the Bringing New Farmers to the Table Project. Incubator farms provide new farmers with plots of land to begin their operations and hone their farming skills before they make an investment in a more permanent location.

Extension part of N.C. State service award

N.C. Cooperative Extension is recognized as one of the factors in North Carolina State University receiving the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement – a Presidential Award. As part of the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, N.C. State is one of only five Presidential Awardees nationwide, and one of two in the “general community service” category.

Lowes Foods pledges support to 10% Campaign

Lowe’s Foods Stores, Inc. of Winston-Salem has signed on as a major partner of the 10% Campaign, a North Carolina initiative designed to encourage consumers to spend 10 percent of their food budget on locally-produced foods.

N.C. Cooperative Extension, N.C. Farm Bureau team present pesticide safety workshops

N.C. Cooperative Extension and the N.C. Farm Bureau Safety Team are partnering to help growers train Spanish-speaking farm workers on pesticide safety. Six upcoming workshops offered across North Carolina will prepare growers to use the Pesticides and Farmworker Health Toolkit, a resource based on the latest pesticide information for North Carolina that also can be tailored to a specific crop and workplace.

Deadline for CEFS internships extended to Feb. 15

The application deadline for the Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ (CEFS) summer internship program for undergraduate students is Wednesday, Feb. 15. Facilities at the CEFS's Cherry Research Farm near Goldsboro will be used for the eight-week, six credit-hour internship program, which will run from June 4 to July 27.

The 10% Campaign receives $5,000 gift from Carolina Farm Credit

Carolina Farm Credit, based in Statesville, has given $5,000 to support the 10% Campaign, a North Carolina initiative designed to encourage consumers to spend 10 percent of their food budget on locally produced foods.

Learn more about Small Farms Week 2012

The itinerary for The Cooperative Extension Program at A&T’s annual celebration of small-scale agriculture is set. The kickoff will be Monday, March 26, in Martin County; Tuesday’s (March 27) educational forum will feature tours of two farms where livestock and produce production are innovatively amalgamated, and the educational forum Wednesday morning (March 28) prior to the Small Farmers Recognition Luncheon will include presentations by a number of authorities on increasing profits from livestock production.

Acidified foods workshop offered in Asheville

The "Acidified Foods Better Process Control School" will be held in Asheville Feb. 22-24. This entrepreneurs' workshop will be led by the N.C. State University Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences Extension Program, in cooperation with the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
