Millstone milestone

It was a 4-H family reunion of sorts as more than 300 people gathered at Camp Millstone in Ellerbe Sunday April 10 to celebrate the opening of a new $1.5 million multi-purpose history and learning center complex.

4-H’ers focus on civic engagement

For North Carolina’s state 4-H president Oshė Pittman, 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus has become an important stop on his journey toward becoming a judge. “I’ve always had a big voice, but this event has helped me further develop my leadership skills and helped me gain skills as a follower as well,” Pittman explained, “because it’s important to be a team player if you want to get things done.” And getting things done was what the three-day event was all about.

$2 million grant will allow 4-H to support more Hispanic youth

National 4-H Council has received a three-year, $2 million grant from the New York Life Foundation to empower more Hispanic youth to succeed in high school, graduate on time and pursue a college education. The funds will support the successful Juntos 4-H program developed by N.C. Cooperative Extension.

An unconventional indoor groundbreaking ceremony Feb. 13 marked the start of construction for a camp auditorium and learning center that an NC State University official said would be the crowning jewel of Millstone 4-H Camp, in North Carolina's Sandhills region.

Dr. T. Carlton Blalock, 89, who served as director of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Cooperative Extension Service from 1978 to 1981, passed away Sept. 16.

Elaine Marshall inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame

N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame this past October, in recognition of her lifetime achievements and contributions to 4-H. Honored by the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development Program, Marshall was among 14 people inducted during the ceremony at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md.

Yoder named to lead 4-H, FCS programs

Dr. Mike Yoder, Extension assistant professor of animal science and coordinator of Extension disaster programs, has accepted the position of associate Extension director and state program leader for 4-H and family and consumer sciences, effective Dec.1.
