Pardue named to lead CALS academic programs

Dr. Sam Pardue has been named associate dean and director of academic programs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, effective May 1. Pardue, former head of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science, has been serving as the interim director of academic programs in CALS since July 1, 2012.

“I have tremendous confidence in Dr. Pardue’s abilities, and I feel confident that he will lead the academic programs component of CALS to the highest level of excellence,” said N.C. State Chancellor Randy Woodson in announcing the appointment. “During the interview process, Dr. Pardue received an overwhelmingly high level of support from faculty, staff and students.”

Pardue served as head of the Prestage Poultry Science Department beginning July 2005. Before serving as department head, he was undergraduate coordinator and a faculty member of poultry science. He also earned three degrees from N.C. State: bachelor’s degree in poultry science and master’s degree and doctorate in physiology. His post-doctoral training was in genetics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

In addition, Pardue has received numerous honors and awards. He is a member of the N.C. State University Academy of Outstanding Teachers and has also been recognized nationally as the recipient of the Purina Mills Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Poultry Science Association’s Student Recruitment Award. He also received a Graduate Student Certificate for Outstanding Teaching and was named Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor at N.C. State. In addition, he received the CALS Kriz Study Leave Award.

He has completed the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy and Academic Programs Committee on Organization and Policy (ESCOP/ACOP) Leadership Development Program and the Newly Appointed Administrators Workshop at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 2007 he was named as a Food Systems Leadership Institute Fellow.

He has published 35 journal series articles and 49 scientific abstracts. He has been an invited speaker at symposia held in Mexico, Costa Rica, Switzerland and Australia. His primary research interests include primordial germ cell biology and in ovo manipulation of broilers and turkeys.
