N.C. 4-H’ers awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships

Students from across the state have received 4-H scholarships from the North Carolina 4-H Foundation to attend institutions of higher learning. During the recent State 4-H Congress held in Raleigh, the foundation awarded more than $78,000 in new scholarships.  The total amount of 4-H scholarships awarded this year, including renewable scholarships, amounts to more than $130,000.

New scholarship winners are listed by county, along with their age, parents’ names and hometowns, scholarships received, intended majors and institution they plan to attend in the fall, where available. Scholarships are awarded to 4-H’ers, based on academic record, recommendations and need. Scholarship winners must be full-time students.

The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities. More than 240,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 21,000 adult and youth volunteers.

Alamance County
Sarah Troxler, 18, daughter of Matt and Martha Troxler of Mebane, received the Dr. Clarence Poe 4-H Scholarship and the Victoria Jean Cope 4-H Scholarship. A home-schooled high school graduate, she plans to attend Peace College to study forensic anthropology.

Bertie County
Leslie Briley, 17, daughter of Jeff and Lisa Briley of Roxobel, received the Ray Wilkinson Communications 4-H Scholarship. A graduate of Morning Star Academy, she plans to attend Barton College to study art, with a concentration in photography.

Bladen County
Allen A. Monk, 17, son of George and Peggy Monk of Elizabethtown, received the Rachel Kirby Thomas and Dr. Frank Bancroft Thomas 4-H Foods and Nutrition Scholarship. A recent graduate of Diamond Trail Academy of Shalom, he plans to attend Bladen Community College to study poultry science and physical science.

Brunswick County
Perry Grosch, 18, son of Gus Grosch and Jane Kulesza of Oak Island, received the Southeast District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate of Salt Marsh Academy home school, he plans to attend the College of Wooster to study archaeology.

Kendrick Morgan received the Edward Gore/General Shelton 4-H Leadership Scholarship. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Burke County
Carly James, 18, daughter of James and Carol Lamb of Morganton, received the Dr. David and Mrs. Carol Burnett 4-H Scholarship for the Western Districts and the Edward H. Leagans Equine Scholarship. A recent graduate of Robert L. Patton High School, she will attend the University of Tennessee at Martin to study general agriculture with a concentration in animal science.

Cabarrus County
Ashley Huber, 18, daughter of Deborah Smith of Concord, received the Rudolph Carl Ellis 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Jay M. Robinson High School, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study biology with a focus on equine studies or animal science.

Carteret County
Amber Nead received the McKinney 4-H Leadership Scholarship. She plans to attend N.C. State University.

Caswell County
George R. Brandon, 18, son of Robert and Sherri Brandon of Blanch, received the Reece and Jesse Crouse Scholarship for the North Central District. A recent graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School, he plans to attend Ferrum College to study agricultural science.

Davidson County
Michael Drake, 19, son of Gary and Sylvia Drake of Welcome, received the L.R. Harrill 4-H Scholarship and the William Michael Vatavuk Memorial Scholarship. A recent graduate of Cedar Creek Academy home school, he plans to attend Davidson Community College.

Edgecombe County
Taylor Owens, 19, daughter of Danny and Michelle Owens of Tarboro, received the Gordon E. Sawyer 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Edgecombe Early College High School, she plans to attend East Carolina University to study physical therapy.

Matthew Drake received the Southern States Cooperative Leadership Scholarship. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Alex Flint received General Hugh Shelton 4-H Leadership Scholarship. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Gaston County
Rachel Isom, 18, daughter of Gary and JoAnne Isom of Gastonia, received the Dr. Eloise Cofer 4- Scholarship and the West Central District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate of Isom Academy, she plans to attend Johnson and Wales University to study culinary arts and food service.

Gates County
Tyler Russell, 18, son of Jim and Sherri Russell of Sunbury, received the Helene C. Knight Scholarship for Gates County. A recent graduate of Gates County High School, he plans to attend N.C. State University to study sports management.

Kimberly Johnson, 18, daughter of Edna Williams of Gates, received the Reba Green-Holley Scholarship for Gates County. A recent graduate of Gates County High School, she plans to attend Elizabeth City State University to study nursing.

Graham County
Melissa Day, 18, daughter of Brad and Martha Day of Robbinsville, received the L.R. Harrill 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Robbinsville High School, she plans to attend Duke University to study biology and Spanish.

Harnett County
Rossie Blinson, 19, daughter jof Bryan and Beth Blinson of Buies Creek, received Carolyn Smith Ivey 4-H Scholarship and the Southern States Cooperative Scholarship. A rising sophomore at N.C. State University, she plans to study agricultural business and animal science.

Mary Kathryn Hardison, 21, daughter of Al and Wanda Hardison of Buies Creek, received the L.R. Harrill 4-H Scholarship. A student at Meredith College, she is studying family and consumer sciences education, with a minor in nutrition.

Haywood County
Sally Dixon, 18, daughter of Diane Floyd of Waynesville, received the Edward Gore/General Shelton 4-H Leadership Scholarship and the N.C. 4-H Alumni and Friends Association Scholarship. A recent graduate of Tuscola High School, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study extension education.

Henderson County
Kyle Stinnett, 18, son of Tim and Marie Stinnett of Mills River, received the John C. McLean Scholarship for the West District and the West District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent home school graduate, he plans to attend Blue Ridge Community College to study law enforcement.

Hoke County
Dixie Elizabeth Acorn, 18, daughter of James and Michelle Acorn of Aberdeen, received the South Central District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate of Pinecrest High School, she plans to attend Sandhills Community College.

Paige Harrelson, 18, daughter of Nathan and Donna Harrelson of Aberdeen, received the I.O. Schaub 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Pinecrest High School, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study animal science.

Johnston County
Julia Foushee, 17, daughter of Jay and Kim Foushee of Roxboro, received the Bruce and Annie Woodard Scholarship for Johnston County. A recent graduate of Person High School and a Johnston County 4-H’er, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study biomedical engineering.

Lenior County
Alex Sugg, 18, daughter of Thomas and Nicole Sugg of Snow Hill, received the Southeast District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate Arendell Parrott Academy, she plans to attend East Carolina University to study biology.

Lincoln County
Chris Schultz, 18, son of Steve and Michelle Schultz of Cherryville, received the Carolyn Heavner Goodwin 4-H Scholarship for Lincoln County and the West Central District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent home school graduate, he plans to attend LeTourneau University to study engineering and intercultural studies.

Mitchell County
Olivia Varney, 18, daughter of Benny and Abigail Varney of Spruce Pine, received the Mitchell County 4-H “Discovery” Scholarship and the Robert M. and Helen B. Runion 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Mountain Heritage High School, she plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Nash County
Daniel Boykin received the L.R. Harrill 4-H Scholarship. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Northampton County
Jasmine Harris, 18, daughter of Gregory and Evangelyn Harris of Conway, received the Anne Kristine Barnes 4-H Scholarship and the Dr. Clarence Poe 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of All God’s Children Home School, she plans to attend Elizabeth City State University to study nutrition and diabetes.

Kendrell Green, 18, daughter of Katinea and Kelvin Green of Pleasant Hill, received the Kristina Jarrell 4-H Electric Scholarship. A recent graduate of Northampton High School, she plans to attend Fayetteville State University to study biology.

Onslow County
Orin Felix received the J. Gregory Clemmons 4-H Scholarship for Onslow County. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Pasquotank County
Jessica Moore received the Vernon James 4-H Scholarship. She plans to attend N.C. State University.

Pitt County
Catherine Wills, 17, daughter of Lawrence and Luella Wills of Greenville, received the Lorna W. Langley 4-H Scholarship and the Dr. Clarence Poe 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of South Central High School, she plans to attend N.C. A&T State University to study nutrition.

Milo Lewis received the Edward Gore/General Shelton 4-H Leadership Scholarship. She plans to attend N.C. State University.

Randolph County
Terri Lane Frazier, 18, daughter of Craig and Kirsten Frazier of Sophia, received the Jane K. Stuart 4-H Scholarship for the North Central District. A recent graduate of Randleman High school, she plans to attend Randolph Community College.

Richmond County
Courtney Miller, 17, daughter of Anne and Jeff Miller of Hamlet, received the South Central District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate of Richmond Senior High School, she plans to attend East Carolina University to study physical therapy and political science.

Rockingham County
Jamie Lee Hayes, 18, daughter of Patricia Lynn Hayes of Burlington, received the North Central District 4-H Horse Scholarship. A recent graduate of Western Alamance High School, she plans to attend Guilford Technical Community College to study architecture.

Stanly County
Adam Barnhardt, 18, son of Rick and Crystal Barnhardt of Locust, received the Lyman B. Dixon Sr. 4-H Scholarship and the Thomas A. Carter Family 4-H Poultry Science Scholarship. A recent graduate of West Stanly High School, he plans to attend N.C. State University to study poultry science and animal science.

Kellie Hatley, 18, daughter of Gary and Sandy Hatley of Stanfield, received the Huddleston Family 4-H Electric Scholarship. A recent graduate of West Stanly High School, she plans to attend Cabarrus College of Health Sciences to study human occupation studies.

Jesse Talley, 21, daughter of Paul and Patti Talley of Locust, received the Rudolph Carl Ellis 4-H Scholarship and the Southern States Cooperative 4-H Leadership Scholarship.  A rising senior at N.C. State University, she is majoring in animal science, with a minor in agribusiness.

Wilson Talley, 18, brother of Jesse Talley (above), received the Dr. Gary S. and Patricia S. Davis 4-H Poultry Science Scholarship and the Southern States Cooperative Leadership Scholarship. A recent graduate of West Stanly High School, he plans to attend N.C. State University and study poultry science and agribusiness.

Tyrrell County
Megan Phillips, 18, daughter of Howard and Tami Phillips of Columbia, received the William E. Sawyer 4-H Scholarship and the Northeast District 4-H Development Fund Scholarship. A recent graduate of Soundside Academy, she plans to attend College of the Albemarle to study library sciences.

Union County
Sam Harris won two scholarships: The Joe and Barbara Brooks Horticultural Scholarship and the Teeter Family Scholarship. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Eric Wright received the N.C. 4-H Horse Program Scholarship. He plans to attend Clemson University.

Wake County
Ann Margaret Dietrich, 19, daughter of Geoff and Sarah Dietrich of Raleigh, received the L.R. Harrill 4-H Scholarship. A student at N.C. State University, she is majoring in poultry science and animal science.

Tori Dronzek, 18, daughter of Elizabeth Dronzek of Raleigh, received the North Central District 4-H Horse Scholarship. A recent graduate of Millbrook High School, she plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to study music education.

Mimrah Hosain, 17, daughter of Nasima Hossain of Raleigh, received the Larry and Joyce Bass 4-H Horticultural Scholarship and the Robert N. Wood Collegiate 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Athens Drive High School, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study math education.

Ashley Kirby, 18, daughter of Barbara and Bill Kirby of Garner, received the Edmund and Elizabeth Aycock 4-H Scholarship. She is a junior at N.C. State majoring in zoology, agroecology and interdisciplinary studies.

Warren County
Elizabeth McAuslan, 17, daughter of Jim and Mary McAuslan of Norlina, received the Edmund and Elizabeth Aycock 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Crossroads Christian School, she plans to attend N.C. State University to study business management.

Wayne County
Holly Stevens, 18, daughter of Bobby and Sylvia Stevens of Goldsboro, received the Ray Wilkinson Communications 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Southern Wayne High School, she plans to attend Mt. Olive College to study communications or religion.

Katy Mazer received the Edward Gore/General Shelton 4-H Leadership Scholarship. She plans to attend N.C. State University.

Wilkes County
Ethan Ward, 18, son of Watson and Dawn Ward of Millers Creek, received the Belinda Holshouser Hester “Go Green, Think Green” 4-H Scholarship. A recent graduate of Faith Christian School, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study geography.

Wilson County
Misty Varnell, 18, daughter of Amber and Jim Varnell of Elm City, received the Farris “Pass it On” 4-H Scholarship. A December home school graduate, she plans to attend Montreat College to study environmental studies and outdoor education.

Kelli Wingfield received the Gary Stott 4-H Scholarship. She plans to attend N.C. State University.
