College names sustainability coordinator

Dr. Danesha Seth Carley, a 2006 doctoral graduate of the North Carolina State University departments of Crop Science and Plant Pathology, recently was named coordinator for sustainability programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The first to hold this new position, Seth Carley said her immediate goals are three-fold: to facilitate public-private partnerships that focus on sustainability, to raise awareness of the college’s efforts in sustainability and to serve as a clearinghouse of information on all of the college’s sustainability-related activity.

“This position is the first of its kind, and we’re so pleased to have Danesha on board,” said Dr. Johnny Wynne, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “Our faculty, staff and students are doing outstanding work in sustainability, and with Danesha’s background and unparalleled energy, she will enable them to accomplish even more.”

Before she took this new position, Seth Carley served as assistant director of the Southern Region IPM Center. She also is a research scientist studying plant health and environmental stress impacts on plant systems.

Seth Carley earned a master’s degree in entomology and plant pathology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., in 1998. She serves as a subject editor for the Journal of Integrated Pest Management and as ecology advisor for the Lonnie Poole Golf Course and the Centennial Campus Middle School. She also is extensively published and holds a number of memberships and committee positions in a variety of academic and trade organizations.

“In order for something to be sustainable, it should be economically viable, environmentally sound and socially just,” Seth Carley said. “The definition of sustainability is all-encompassing, but these principles provide the basic guidelines I’m following in my work for the college. I’m excited about the possibilities.”
