Cattlemen recognize Franklin livestock agent

Martha Leonard Mobley, agriculture agent for N.C. Cooperative Extension in Franklin County, was recently honored for her 24 years of service by the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association.

Mobley was recognized for her dedication and years of service to cattle men and women in Franklin and neighboring counties. The association highlighted these contributions by Mobley during her tenure:

• She was instrumental in creating awareness of the Tar River Basin water quality rules and their impact on agriculture during the rule-making process in the state legislature.
• She established an annual BEEF Roast to raise funds youth scholarships
  and various projects.
• She was instrumental in the establishment of the late Senator James D. Speed Endowment Fund with N.C. State University.  The endowment provides
  scholarships for North Carolina youth exhibiting cattle at the N.C. State Fair.
• In 2003, she helped establish Voluntary Agricultural Districting program,
  with more than 21,000 acres currently in the program, to promote farmland
  preservation and awareness of agriculture.

In addition, Mobley has secured more than $800,000 in grants for the county and state that support the livestock industry. In 2004, she was named by her peers as the “Franklin County Employee of the Year.”
