CEFS to hold 20-year anniversary events, Oct. 17-18

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), one of the nation’s foremost centers for research, extension and education in sustainable agriculture and local food systems, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014 with a SOILbration in Goldsboro on Oct. 17 and speakers and a reunion dinner in Raleigh Oct. 18.

North Carolina State University will receive $12.4 million over the next four years from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve a crop that is an important food staple in sub-Saharan Africa – the sweet potato.

Agroecology educators come to NC State to learn

Nearly 150 educators from sustainable agriculture programs and student farms were in Raleigh earlier this month for the sixth annual Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Conference. Conference participants from around the country came to NC State University for panel discussions, farm and community garden tours and a kickoff dinner at the Agroecology Education Farm at the Lake Wheeler Road Education Unit.

The Joint Council of Extension Professionals (JCEP) has selected the N.C. Cooperative Extension Facilitation Team as one of two recipients for the JCEP Excellence in Teamwork Award and as a presenter for the 2015 JCEP Conference in Las Vegas.

Research stations receive new equipment

Agricultural research in North Carolina got a boost this year from $2.5 million in state funds allocated to upgrade equipment at the state’s network of research stations. Recently, state and university officials gathered at Clayton’s Central Crops Research Station to demonstrate some of the new equipment that will help modernize agricultural experiments across the state.

N.C. Cooperative Extension celebrates 100th birthday

Friends and employees of North Carolina Cooperative Extension came to Raleigh May 19-20 to celebrate Extension’s centennial with a barbecue dinner, legislative advocacy and the signing of a proclamation declaring May 20 as N.C. Cooperative Extension Day. More than 1,000 people were on hand Monday evening at the N.C. State Fairgrounds Expo Center for dinner and a program celebrating Extension’s past, present and future. This month marks 100 years since the signing of the Smith-Lever Act that created Extension programs across the country.
