In Lee County, Extension supports tornado recovery

On April 16, Seth Holt was working on his farm in Lee County, when he saw a dark cloud headed his way. Holt, a Lee County agricultural Extension agent, took shelter from what turned out to be a major thunderstorm on his farm. But later he realized how lucky he had been when he saw the devastation that tornadoes had done to his county.

Historian Clark to host session at 4-H exhibit

During 4-H Congress, 4-H'ers visiting the "Leading Together" exhibit at D.H. Hill Library will have the opportunity to talk with Dr. Jim Clark, retired N.C. State faculty member and author of the centennial book on N.C. 4-H, Clover all Over: North Carolina's First 4-H Century.

Entomology students share knowledge with N.C. schools

In a classroom at N.C. State University’s Gardner Hall, graduate student Stephanie Gorski teaches a lesson in entomology. But the class of second graders benefiting from her instruction is in a classroom at Carrboro Elementary School, about 30 miles away.

Two news scientists join Kannapolis research institute

KANNAPOLIS – N.C. State University’s Plants for Human Health Institute at the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis announces that two more scientists will join its faculty this summer. Beginning July 1, Dr. Slavko Komarnytsky and Dr. Xu “Sirius” Li will begin work at the campus, filling pharmacogenomics and metabolic pathway engineering positions, respectively.

Agriculture agents receive communications awards

A North Carolina Cooperative Extension agriculture agent and an agent team have received communications awards from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. Shawn Banks of Johnston County won first place in the feature story category. A team of agents in the Successful Gardener program won in the fact sheet category.

During the centennial celebration events for Family & Consumer Sciences, which took place May 25 at the Jane S. McKimmon Center on the N.C. State campus, 25 inaugural members into the Jane S. McKimmon Hall of Fame.

Family & Consumer Sciences celebrates 100 years of service to N.C. families

A special event May 25 at N.C. State University will mark the 100th anniversary of North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service’s Family & Consumer Sciences program. Beginning with home demonstration canning clubs, the family and consumer sciences program of N.C. Cooperative Extension has always addressed needs of North Carolina families since 1911.

Two College of Agriculture and Life Science faculty members, Dr. M. Cassandra Wiggins and Dr. Richard McLaughlin, were among nine faculty and professionals from N.C. State University recently inducted into the university’s Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension.

Military youth participate in Wolfpack baseball game

As N.C. State University’s baseball team took to the field against Wake Forest on Sunday, April 3, military youth and their families representing all branches of North Carolina’s military were on hand to participate in the second annual Military Appreciation Day Baseball Game.
