Eight counties receive volunteers through FoodCorps service program

North Carolina State University, N.C. 4-H and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) will host six FoodCorps service members who will conduct nutrition education, build and tend school gardens, and expand farm to cafeteria sourcing of healthy food. FoodCorps members will serve in the following eight North Caroline counties: Brunswick, Gaston, Guilford, Moore, New Hanover, Wake, Warren and Wayne.

N.C. 4-H’ers awarded more than $120,000 in scholarships

Students from across the state have received 4-H scholarships from the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund, to attend institutions of higher learning. During the recent State 4-H Congress held in Raleigh, the foundation awarded more than 70 scholarship

Croatian university representative visits CALS

A new relationship between N.C. State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a Croatian university offers opportunities for CALS students. N.C. State recently signed a memorandum of understanding with University of Zagreb in the Croatian capital, and in July, Ivana Prosinecki of Zagreb’s International Relations Office visited N.C. State to share information about what the university could offer for students here.

10% Campaign tracks $5.7 million in sales

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ statewide initiative to stimulate economic development, create jobs and promote North Carolina’s farms and fisheries announced that more than $5.7 million in local foods expenditures have been reported by local individuals, organizations and institutions participating in the campaign.

The 4-H Cookery: Divine Swine

The smells wafting through the air at the North Carolina 4-H Cookery competition were nearly enough to break down a vegetarian. The parents and friends wading through the aromas were struck by the intensity of each scent as they wandered towards one booth for a sample… and then on to the next. Those smells were of pork, turkey, chicken and beef – all prepared in different and exciting ways by kids and young adults, ranging in age from 9 to 18, for a panel of judges.

Claudette Smith honored by AEA

Dr. Claudette Smith, interim associate administrator and program leader for Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H for The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University, was one of two members of Extension faculties at 1890 land-grants honored with an Association of Extension Administrators Chairman's Award at the AEA's annual meeting in St. Louis, June 26 - July 1.

N.C. State researchers to study genetics of heat tolerance in poultry

Poultry science researchers at N.C. State University and two other institutions are hoping to learn more about the genetic traits and responses that could help poultry better cope with heat stress. Such knowledge will help poultry producers around the world plan for rising temperatures from global climate change.

University Dining and North Carolina Cooperative Extension will partner to offer Cook Smart, Eat Smart to N.C. State students this fall. The partnership will provide students with an opportunity to learn healthy cooking techniques.

State FFA officers elected at Raleigh Convention

Four FFA members were elected state officers at the 2011-2012 State FFA Convention held at the Raleigh Convention Center June 21-23. New officers are State President John Stewart of Knightdale; State Vice President Caroline Tart of Goldsboro; State Vice President Beverly Hampton of Mount Ulla; State Vice President Katie Cauthen of Mount Pleasant; State Vice President Hannah Russell of Asheboro; and State Vice President Alyssa Ramsey of Marshall.
