Mary Kate Lanier, academic advisor and lecturer in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences, was recently named the recipient of NC State University’s 2023–24 New Advisor Award. 

Joy Morgan, assistant professor of agricultural and human sciences, Melissa Merrill, associate department head for animal science, and Erin McKenney, assistant professor of applied ecology, were each nominated for a faculty advisor award. 

The New Advisor Award recognizes a primary advisor who has served in the position for less than three calendar years and for whom advising students comprises over half of their responsibilities.

Lanier was honored at the Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards ceremony in January 2024. She will be considered for an advising award through the National Academic Advising Association later this year.

In total, Lanier advises 145 students who study agricultural education and agricultural science in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences. Additionally, she advises the Agricultural and Human Sciences ambassador team and the FFA Alumni and Supporters student organization. 

Katie Sanders, an assistant professor and extension specialist in Agricultural and Human Sciences, nominated Lanier for the award.

“She demonstrates all the best qualities of a committed academic advisor through developing strong relationships with her advisees, connecting them to university resources and advocating for their well-being and academic success,” Sanders says.

Lanier appreciates that her colleagues and students recognize her efforts and support her growth.

“I truly believe I have the best job in the world; the students make this my dream job. It’s an immense privilege for a student to trust me and share their dreams for the future. I strive to do everything possible to help them achieve those dreams and desires.” 

Lanier holds a master’s degree in agricultural and extension education and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education, both from NC State. While a graduate student, she excelled in leadership, winning several awards in 2022, including the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Graduate Student Teaching Award and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Graduate Instructor recognition.
